Same Sex Marriages on Hold Again

The Courts have spoken and same-sex marrriages in California are on hold...again. The matter is going to have to wind its way through the court system but it looks like it may have been fast-tracked so that a decision by December is possible.

Until the law is settled, California still affords same sex couples multiple legal rights closely akin to marital rights through Domestic Partner registration and also through the potential recognition of similar "relationships" entered into in other states.

If you are in a same sex relationship and need to understand your legal options concerning support, property rights or custody of children, the law does address those in the California Family Code Section 297 and following. You can see those statutes at:

VSA Attorneys Support Ventura County!

It has always been part of the traditional responsibility of attorneys to be active in their communities and support local organizations and important causes. The attorneys at Van Sickle & Associates promote this philosophy in their own personal and professional activities.

Associate attorneys Amy Van Sickle and Rein Perryman volunteer their services at the Ventura County Family Law Clinic at the courthouse in Ventura.

Associate Renne Dehesa is active in the Mexican American Bar Association as well as the "Barristers" which is a program providing support and mentoring for new attorneys.

Attorney Sarah Weddle helps raise funds for the Women's Resource Center and Sarah's House Maternity Home for Unwed Mothers in Simi Valley.

Partner Richard Van Sickle and his wife, Diane Rowley Van Sickle have founded an organization designed to reduce and then eliminate the euthanasia of companion animals at the county animal shelter in Camarillowww.vcpapa.org . Those efforts were recently highlighted in the Star newspaper.

"I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something, and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do". - Helen Keller

At VSA we believe everyone has something of value to bring to the table...and each of us, in our own way and according to our own interests and beliefs, are doing just that.

McCourt Divorce and Income Available for Support

The divorce proceedings pending between Frank and Jamie McCourt in Los Angeles Superior Court shed light on interesting legal issues for California Family Law practioners. Specifically, the most recent spousal support order raised eyebrows for most people who have managed to live on a bit less than the approximately $600,000.00  per month awarded to Jamie McCourt. Two things come immediately to mind. First, everything is relative. If your life style during marriage cost 100 times more than what most people spend, then the support awarded by the family court will probably be 100 times higher than what most people should expect. Second, the "income" that is available from which to pay support is not always easy to ascertain. In the McCourt's case, they agree to having "paid" their two adult sons a total of over $600,000.00  a year, but neither of the parents can describe what the sons did to earn those monies. The family court can look past what people "call " payments and add it back into the pot of money available for support. These legal issues are not uncommon...but the actual numbers can be mind boggling to many of us. This case is just at its preliminary stages so we can expect more revelations in coming months as property division issues, including ownership of the Dodgers, take the spot light.
